It's official. Lionel Messi won the Golden Ball 2009 and his choice as best player of the year appears in today's edition of the magazine 'France Football', which grants the award. The Barcelona player won, as expected, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xavi Silver Ball and Bronze respectively.
Messi scored 473 points compared to the 233 of the 170 Christian and Xavi. Andres Iniesta was fourth with 149. Kaka is in sixth place behind Cameroon Samuel Etoo.

Also as Spanish Alfredo di Stefano was named Footballer of the Year in 1957 and 1959 and Silver Ball in 1956.
